Scientists believe crocodiles are an ancient species over 200 million years old that has outlasted even the dinosaurs. Scientists believe their biology has changed little in that time. Crocodiles live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. They tend to congregate in fresh water habitats like rivers, lakes, wetlands and sometimes brackish waters. The caiman crocodiles of the Amazon include the Black Caiman that has been over-hunted and is now protected.
