26. Pandas — Although recent conservation efforts in China have been successful and the giant panda populations are on the rise, it is estimated there are less than 1,600 living in the wild today. China also has another 239 living in captivity and another 27 outside the country. Wild pandas live in the mountains of China where they spend more than half the day eating away at bamboo shoots, stems and leaves. Pandas need large amounts of bamboo since it makes up almost 99% of their vegetarian diet. Habitat destruction continues to be the greatest threat to the panda’s survival in the wild.
